Board Stiff LIVE® is a private enterprise. Founded and run by board-certified, sub-specialty trained, practicing academic anesthesiologists, Board Stiff LIVE is dedicated to a single mission: Providing an exceptional, effective board preparation experience to our clients.

Christopher Gallagher, MD started the ball rolling while studying for his own oral boards. Why was it so onerous, he wondered? Why did people fall apart before or during the exam, literally quaking in their wing tips or heels?

He determined that crux of the situation was that people were not used to talking out loud and defending their points. They had never taken an oral board exam in their lives before, and this first experience – with such heavy repercussions – was a very anxiety-provoking experience.

After that revelation, Chris began writing the Board Stiff series of books on taking the oral boards, and for the many readers of his books, he literally made opaque, clear…the rivers, part…and the sun, shine.

But what no book can do is allow you to practice with someone who can correct, guide, and critique you ... so the Board Stiff the review series begat the Board Stiff Live® for the Oral Boards.

We didn’t stop there. After the success of the prep courses for the Anesthesia Oral Boards, the founders decided to apply their highly personalized style to Written Boards review, helping students parse through written questions to find out what the Board is actually asking.

Dr. Gallagher is a board-certified, fellowship-trained, cardiac anesthesiologist, who is also board-certified in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.

He is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Stonybrook University, formerly known as the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he is the Anesthesiology Residency Program Director and the Director of Simulation Training. He formerly served as Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology, CVT Anesthesiology Residency Director, Director of Oral Board Preparation, and Anesthesiology Residency Program Director, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Gallagher is a linguist, comedian, and a prolific writer. His world-renowned Board Stiff series includes the following top-selling books: Board Stiff, Board Stiff Too, Board Stiff TEE, and Anesthesia Unplugged. His highly-successful Board Stiff Live Review Courses have helped hundreds of people pass their oral and written boards in Anesthesiology.

Dr. Cooper is a board-certified, fellowship-trained, cardiac anesthesiologist, who is also certified in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography. He holds a dual-appointment as Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Nurse Anesthesia at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies.

Formerly the Vice-Chairman for Clinical Operations and Clinical Director of Operating Rooms at the prestigious Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, he is currently the Chief of Anesthesiology at the University of Miami Hospital, at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami. He has previously served as Director of the CVT Anesthesiology Fellowship Program and as Director of Medication Safety and Quality Assurance for both the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and Ochsner Clinic.

Dr. Cooper is a contributing author to the Board Stiff series, and is also a writer and presenter of many papers and abstracts.

Dr. Silverman is a board certified neuro-anesthesiologist and a critical care medicine specialist. He serves as Chief of Critical Care Medicine, Clinical Director of Jackson Memorial Hospital Operative Services, and Director of Airway Training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Anesthesiology Residency Program. He holds a dual appointment as Assistant Professor of Clinical and Critical Care Anesthesia at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Nurse Anesthesia, and serves as Medical Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program, at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies.

Dr. Silverman formerly served as Director for Resident Training at the Debakey Cardiothoracic ICU, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and he was an attending intensivist at the prestigious M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Silverman is also a contributing author to the Board Stiff series.

 

As we mentioned, faculty consists of board-certified academic anesthesiologists with a complete range of sub-specialty training. We chose an academic faculty, because these are the people that teach professionally. Every day they question, lecture, and write books and articles; this is their territory. Why hire so many sub-specialists as instructors? That’s because a cardiac anesthesiologist may not know the risks of uterine exteriorization or a neuro-anesthesiologist may not now how to calculate the flow velocity from a TEE…and so on.
