FAQ ORAL EXAMS

What is the student/teacher ratio at Board Stiff Live?

Our ratio is the best in the industry: 1:4

We believe strongly in small group sessions. For our oral board courses, we keep our ratio to 4 students per examiner. One student at a time rotates into the “hot seat,” with the other students acting as junior examiners, offering their own critique of your performance.

Where do the Questions Come From?
Our questions have been collected through years of experience from hundreds of board-certified anesthesiologists.
Do some of the questions come from the actual Boards?
We are not deaf when people tell us what questions they were given in the exam. However, just like the real Boards, we update and rewrite our questions constantly to keep them up-to-date to reflect the current body of anesthesiology literature. (If anyone claims to know the upcoming stem questions for the Oral Board exam, please call the FBI.)
How does the course actually work?
It’s no smoke and mirrors. No complicated algorithm. Our mock orals work in a 4-person rotation, keeping each participant actively involved. One student will be the examinee in the Oral Board process, questioned by an examiner who has been carefully trained, and who can administer nearly exact Anesthesia Oral Board Examinations. We start with a stem question from our exhaustive compilations, and quiz you through all aspects of the anesthetic management in a time-limited manner. We finish each round with a host of grab-bag questions and then proceed to evaluation. Sound familiar? Sound like the boards? BINGO! The other candidates will act as junior examiners and participate in the post exam critique. This assures that you will learn from your responses and other’s sessions. It’s a huge difference from watching a mock review in a cavernous auditorium, where only a few lucky participants get to actually practice.
Will there be any lectures, or just the practice exams?
We want to give you as much mock oral face time as possible. However, if we observe during the course of the mock exams that a student or students show weaknesses in one or more areas (i.e.; pacemakers, ventilator management, etc.), we will offer some discussion on those topics during lunch or other breaks. You are free to listen in, eat, or continue with small group exams. The topics for our extemporaneous reviews come directly from the students in that particular course…and are tailored to their particular needs. Our vast experience, along with our academic and clinical work, makes this possible.

Where are the courses held?
At this time, the Board Stiff LIVE® Anesthesia Oral Boards Review Course is held in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Las Vegas, in our home base in Fort Lauderdale/Miami, and in the city hosting the actual exam.
What is the cost of the course?
After listening closely to our clients, we have devised a straightforward pricing system. We offer a complete, three-day intensive mock oral course (Friday evening, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning) for $2,395. Students repeating the course will receive a $400 discount ($1,995). There is nothing else – no “extras” – to purchase. Full payment is required at registration.
Your fees seem higher than some other courses…why?
It’s simple math. Our courses offer one board-certified practicing academic anesthesiologist for every four applicants, for two full days. Yes, we could charge less, like some of our competitors…but then, like our competitors, we would hold our drills in a huge lecture hall, with little student participation, and questions presented in PowerPoint. We would have to increase our teacher/student ratio from 1:4 to 1:20, or maybe 1:50 candidates…you get the picture.
What about hotel arrangements?
Lodging arrangements are ultimately your responsibility. The courses are held in conveniently located hotels in each city. We can also provide a list of alternative hotels nearby upon request.
